The winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry have been announced

Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The laureates have created organometallic compounds that have previously unseen possibilities for manufacturing materials with new functions.

The winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry have been Japanese Susumu Kitagawa, Australian Richard Robson and American Omar Yaghi “for the development of organometallic frameworks”. This was announced on the prize page on the X social network on Wednesday, October 8.

“The 2025 Nobel Prize laureates in Chemistry have created molecular structures with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can pass. These structures, metal-organic frameworks, can be used to collect water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases or catalyze chemical reactions. By developing metal-organic frameworks, the laureates have given chemists new opportunities to solve some of the problems we face,” the Nobel Committee said in a press release.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry is worth 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million). The money will be divided equally between the three laureates.

“Metal-organic compounds have enormous potential, creating previously unseen opportunities for tailor-made materials with new functions,” explained Heiner Linke, chairman of the Nobel Committee in Chemistry.

As a reminder, on October 6, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine were announced. The awards were awarded to American scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell, as well as Japanese scientist Simon Sakaguchi for “discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance,” which prevents the immune system from harming the body.

And on October 7, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics were announced. The winners were scientists from Great Britain John Clarke, France Michel Devoret, and the United States John M. Martinis for research in the field of quantum mechanics.
